Hello everyone! My name is Ms Thomas and I am the art teacher here at Menihek High School. When I’m not teaching, I’m creating. Most of my personal works are created using pencil, pen & ink, watercolour, or acrylic but I also enjoy relief printmaking, and digital art and photography.
I’ve been teaching art since September of 2002. That may seem like a long time to some but it has truly flown by. Seventeen years into this profession and I still look forward to coming to school every day to help students express themselves and realize their creative potential.
I’ve had many teachers and artists inspire me along my artistic journey. Some of whom I met quite early in my life. It was through encouragement and tutelage from my arts community that I decided to pursue higher learning in the Arts. I completed a BFA degree from Memorial University’s Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook, NL. And from there moved on to get my BEd with a conjoint Diploma in Technology Education from Memorial University in St. John’s, NL.
There is a misconception that there is no future in the Arts. In fact, many of my past art students who completed post secondary art education programs are now working in their chosen field: animators, illustrators, photographers, graphic designers, web designers, gaming developers, professional artists, fashion designers, curators, teachers… and the list goes on. I have helped guide many grade twelve students over the years with application processes and admission portfolios to post secondary institutions. If a career in the Arts is something you are interested in pursuing after graduation, please come see me. I can help in this process!
Feel free to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions about the art programs here at Menihek or for any other concerns.
